I/DD Risk Factors &
Empowerment Committee
Creating safer, more inclusive communities through communication and connection

Our Focus
The I/DD Risk Factors and Empowerment initiative is dedicated to building stronger, safer, and more inclusive environments for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD). We believe that one of the most powerful tools for inclusion is effective, respectful communication.
What We Do
We are developing a neurodivergent-friendly community training program designed to equip individuals at neuro-inclusive housing properties—and in the broader community—with the tools they need to communicate more effectively with people who experience the world differently.
Our program will include:
-
Training for property staff, neighbors, and service providers at neuro-inclusive housing communities
-
Workshops for local community members to increase awareness and build communication skills
-
Resources and guidance developed with input from self-advocates and professionals
-
A focus on respectful language, personal space, sensory awareness, and behavioral interpretation

Why It Matters
People with I/DD, including those who are neurodivergent, are at greater risk of being misunderstood, excluded, or harmed—often due to gaps in community knowledge. We’re working to shift that narrative by building bridges of understanding.

Everyone benefits when our communities are informed, compassionate, and inclusive.
