Exploring the future of neuro-inclusive housing for older adults with I/DD

Our Focus

The Elderly Housing Alignment, Design, and Programs Committee is dedicated to addressing the evolving housing needs of aging adults with autism and/or intellectual and developmental disabilities (A/I/DD). We bring together experts, providers, and advocates to shape housing solutions that promote dignity, accessibility, and inclusion.

What We Do

As individuals with A/I/DD age, their housing needs often grow more complex. Traditional models for elder housing don't always consider the unique sensory, social, and support needs of neurodivergent individuals.

Our committee is leading conversations and collaborations to explore what neuro-inclusive housing could—and should—look like for older adults with higher needs.

We believe that aging adults deserve homes where they feel safe, understood, and empowered, surrounded by communities that respect their unique experiences.

  • Engage with elder housing providers, disability advocates, families, and individuals with lived experience to gather insights and ideas

  • Identify barriers in current elder housing models that impact neurodivergent individuals

  • Explore design features and program supports that foster accessibility, sensory regulation, autonomy, and social inclusion

  • Advocate for policy and programmatic changes that bridge gaps between elder housing and disability services

Why It Matters

The population of adults with A/I/DD is growing—and aging. Yet many housing systems are not yet prepared to meet their needs. Without intentional design and thoughtful program development, older adults risk facing environments that are isolating, overwhelming, or inaccessible.

By acting now, we can create a future where aging individuals with A/I/DD continue to live with dignity, choice, and connection.
